Lexington Golf Club, owned
and operated by the City of Lexington, North
Carolina has been voted “Top 5 Public
Renovations of the Year for 2004” by
GolfInc. Magazine. 25 other golf
courses from across the country participated
in the renovation competition which was held
in March by the industry respected magazine.
The “blind” competition,
meaning the panelists had no idea of the
course name or location, was based on the
following criteria: 1) how well the
renovation achieved the owner’s goals, 2)
upgrades in course routing and aesthetics
and 3) the improvement of course playability
and maintainability. Skylinks at Long Beach
of Long Beach, California finished first in
the competition, while Rockleigh Golf Course
of Rockleigh, NJ finished second. Places
were not awarded after runner-up, but
Lexington received certification from
GolfInc. Magazine of its Top 5 finish.
“We are extremely thrilled to have won this
ranking. It speaks well of the great work
put in by the architect Mike Gleason,
Malphrus Course Construction and our staff,”
stated Head Golf Professional JJ
Fashimpaur. “It also further substantiates
just how good our new golf course is with
our current customers, as well as our future
customers.” On Monday, April 25th,
Fashimpaur presented the award to an
enthusiastic Lexington City Council.
The course closed for nearly
one year to complete the renovation
process. Pinehurst golf architect Mike
Gleason headed the design process, while
Malphrus Construction of Hilton Head Island,
SC managed the construction plans. The
results netted the course six brand new
holes and extensive upgrades to those
remaining. All fairways were sprigged with
new 419 bermuda grass and the greens were
reshaped and grassed with the new A1/A4
blend bentgrass. All bunkers were renovated
and a number of new bunkers were placed for
strategic and aesthetic purposes. In an
effort to improve the overall playability
for every type of player, all blind approach
shots to greens were eliminated, new tees
were created to add some 500 yards in length
to the course, and new seniors and ladies
tees were positioned to accommodate this
growing player base and their needs.
Lastly, a new double row irrigation system
was installed to ensure great playing
conditions all year long.
Lexington Golf Club is a
